How We Become an ESOL Student
Upon registering a student, and checking off one or more boxes on the Home Language Survey with a " yes ", which states that the student either speaks a second language or is exposed to it at home, the ESOL teacher at the school is mandated by the State of Florida to administer an oral language test called IPT to students in grades k-5. If the student does not pass this test, they enter the Program and will receive the Accommodations and instruction with ESOL Strategies, and small group help from their classroom teachers who are required to be ESOL endorsed in Florida, as well as well as from the ESOL Facilitator at the school. Priority in forming small instructional groups is given to the NES, non-English speaking students and to the low LES, Limited English speaking students. In Grades 3 to 12, if the student passes the English oral IPT test, they are then given the IPT online Reading and Writing tests to see if they qualify for the ESOL Program. The parent is notified every year if their child is still active in the ESOL Program through a letter that is sent home titled: Notification of Placement and Services in the ESOL Program. This year the state of Florida has adopted and purchased a high quality test based on research in the field of assessing second language acquisition from the WIDA Consortium. These tests will be administered to all ESOL students from grades K through 12 starting in February 2016. They will measure second language acquisition in English at each grade level in different levels and tiers integrating the language of Math, Science, and Social Studies in with the reading. All ESOL teachers must attend an all day workshop and pass two state online tests in order to be certified in the administration of this test. |
